GW Office of Sustainability to Host

Third Annual DC Climathon

A 24-hour global hackathon focused on solving city challenges to overcome climate change

WASHINGTON—The George Washington University’s Office of Sustainability and Institute for Corporate Responsibility will host the third annual DC Climathon: Hack Resilience on Friday, October 27. DC Climathon brings together area participants to develop creative local and regional solutions on climate change and sustainable development. As a member of 100 Resilient Cities, Resilient DC is an enthusiastic participant in the event.

This year innovators will generate solutions that prepare District residents for emerging impacts and future climate impacts such as urban heat island effect, extreme weather events, and increased flooding. Hackathon participants can win up to $10,000 in cash prizes, an entry into the GW New Venture Competition and the chance to present the idea to city officials.

“By 2100, the average U.S. temperature is projected to increase between 3°-12°F. Our local institutions face intense changes that will result in flooding, extreme heat, air quality risks, and major weather events,” says Meghan Chapple, director of the GW Office of Sustainability and senior advisor on university sustainability initiatives. “Innovators are coming together to form creative solutions that will help local communities prepare for the pending changes.”
